Double take: Year prompts reflection Print E-mail
Tuesday, 27 April 2010 08:01

During the 2009-10 school year, top entertainment stories highlighted many a conversation.

Among its scandals and stories, some were entertaining; many were hard to forget. Others sparked memory and emotion. Overall, it was certainly a year to remember.

On June 25, 2009, Michael Jackson died at the age of 50, leaving an awaiting tour and millions of fans with unanswered questions.

On July 17, 2009, Walter Cronkite left the nation as a prime example of one of the best broadcast journalists of all time.

Then, there was Lady Gaga, who intrigued America with her infamous style of dress, especially Jan. 31, at the 52nd-annual Grammy Awards, and numerous pop hits.

On October 1, 2009, on NBC’s “Late Night with David Letterman,” Letterman announced being victim of extortion to someone who threatened to publicize his sexual relations with female employees.

In other NBC news, Conan O’Brien and Jay Leno’s feud sparked low ratings for each show.

Oprah announced her 25th season would finalize her talk-show career and James Cameron’s Dec.18, 2009, “Avatar” release sparked recognition of the growing inception of 3D motion and imaging technology in film.

Controversy between Kanye West and Taylor Swift, Rihanna and Chris Brown and Jon and Kate Gosselin also ensued (speaking of the latter, not surprising that it made the list – getting married, giving birth to sextuplets, starring in a reality show and ending it in divorce calls for quite an entertainment news-maker).

Yes, the school year was host to a wide array of happenings among the world of entertainment. Many provided students at Appalachian State University and around the globe the opportunity to connect over commonalities that forever branded them apart of our culture.

And, therefore, I leave you to reflect – to double take – on everything that happened this year.

Whether you reflect on the things that happened nationally, locally, or even individually, may you remember what made the year what it was.

For many of us, when the last exam has been graded and the last book returned, we are fortunate enough to look back on life at school, among our dorms and apartments and shared with our friends and professors.

This being the case, I encourage you to do two things: to reflect on the lives of those who may not be quite so fortunate and at the same time, take advantage of your time in college to discover as much as you possibly can.

It never hurts to do a double take; you might just learn something you never thought to think twice about before.
