New to Boone? Want to spend more time enjoying the mountains? There's no shortage of options for hiking, swimming and climbing, but that can sometimes make it hard to choose. To simplify things, we asked six Mountaineers for their favorite outdoor spaces, then added one of our own. Think of it as a one-week primer of the High Country.
Avery Smith, alumna: Linville Gorge
"It's great for rock climbing, has easy hiking and has gorgeous views."
Hilary Holmes, junior: Boone Fork Trail
"It's super accessible, not a hard hike and has pretty water."
Lindsey Moody, junior: Hebron Rock Colony
"It's beautiful and the climb up there is a good workout and it's totally worth it. There's a beautiful view from the top."
Maggy Boutwell, sophomore: Snake Pit Falls
"I liked it because of the chill atmosphere and this big rock you could jump in from the middle of the river."
Tyler Woodall, sophomore: Compression Falls
"I just like jumping off the falls. I love the adrenaline rush."
Avery Snipes, sophomore: Thunder Hill
"It's on the Parkway. You can play hide and seek at night or flash light tag. In the fall, the leaves are beautiful and in the winter, it looks like Narnia."
The Appalachian's Pick: Beacon Heights
Easy hike, gorgeous view, right off the Parkway. This is an easy but rewarding outing, and one of our personal favorites.
So, what are you waiting for? Get out there and go exploring.
