Women’s tennis had one of its most successful seasons in school history, easily surpassing its 2011 win total to finish above .500 with a 13-12 record.
That total was the highest in head coach Colin Crother’s 14-year tenure at ASU.
Along with their record, the Mountaineers played well against some of the top competition in the state. The season’s marquee win, a 5-2 victory over Eastern Carolina, set the tone for ASU’s advancement in the SoCon tournament.
Freshman Gabby Gabriel was the surprise of the season. Gabriel finished as the No. 6 tennis player on the team and won 14 singles matches, including a five-match win streak in April.
“I thought this season was pretty good,” Gabriel said. “I gained a lot more than my tennis accomplishments. I learned a lot from being on the team this year.”
The Mountaineers will part ways with four seniors, including Kim-Lea Dinh, who finished the season as the No. 5 singles tennis player.
To replace this strong senior class, the team is bringing in some new and talented young freshmen.
“Next year will be a completely new dynamic because we have six freshmen coming in, which will be exciting, as they will bring a whole new level of enthusiasm,” rising senior Ellie Linsell said.
The Mountaineers will add six new freshmen to their roster next season, which will help with depth during early tournaments. Based on recent recruiting classes by Coach Crothers, like the 2009 class that brought in Linsell and fellow rising senior Jennifer Ansari, the Mountaineers can expect a 2013 season that exceeds expectations.
