The North Carolina State Board of Elections voted 3-2 last Thursday to accept Watauga County Board Chairman Bill Aceto’s early voting plan, but requested that the university approve Legends as the location.

The university has until 5 p.m. Sept. 13 to decide. If the request is denied then early voting for 2016 will take place in the Plemmons Student Union.

Chancellor Sheri Everts said in a letter to Aceto last June that she would prefer the site be in the student union.

“I respectfully submit that the Plemmons Student Union is the only location on campus that satisfies our mutual goals of providing a convenient and safe environment for citizens and volunteers in compliance with statutory requirements for elections,” Everts wrote.

Matthew Dockham, director of external affairs and community relations, said the university is reviewing the State Board’s decision and expects a decision to be made by Tuesday.
