Top ranked Softball gears up for SoCon finale

The Appalachian State softball team is riding high at the top of the SoCon conference as they prepare to compete in the SoCon tournament.

The Mountaineers (25-16, 16-5 SoCon) are on a four-game winning streak after sweeping Furman and a 6-3 victory over 37-8 USC Upstate on Tuesday. With the conference tournament nearing, head coach Shae Wesley plans to just keep getting better.

“Our approach to the whole season has been to get better every game,” Wesley said. “We knew coming in we had a very young staff with two seniors on a roster of only 20. We knew that as we progressed throughout the season we would be in a pretty good spot at the end of the season.”

While App State enjoys a five-game advantage over the second-place SoCon team, College of Charleston, the conference remains highly contested with C of C, UNC Greensboro, Georgia Southern and Chattanooga all within one conference win of each other.

“We had some losses against some conference teams,” senior outfielder Allie Cashion said. “We’re ready to get back in there and play them and hopefully come out with a win this time.”

The conference tournament begins May 8 in the middle of finals week at App State, but junior Alissa Schoelkoph says it’s not going to be a problem.

“We just take the finals early, it’s really no big deal,” said Schoelkoph.

Senior Meghan Smith is confident in her team’s ability to top their SoCon foes.

“We always play our game,” Smith said. “We play our game and we play hard, so it really shouldn’t matter who we end up playing in the tournament. This conference is so tight that really anyone could win it. Hopefully we can stay on top.”

Softball will continue to role into the postseason Saturday when they will travel to non-conference Auburn for a doubleheader.
