The Turchin Center for the Visual Arts will be hosting the 40th anniversary of the annual Martin and Doris Rosen Outdoor Sculpture Competition & Exhibition July 11, beginning at 10 a.m at the Schaefer Center for the Performing Arts.
The event will feature 10 new installations of contemporary American sculptures, transforming App State’s campus into an art gallery. A 40-year retrospective of the event will be available at the Schaefer Center at the beginning of the sculpture walk to celebrate the anniversary, followed by a juror-led tour of the 10 sculptures down River Street. Each year, a selected juror chooses 10 sculptures as finalists to be displayed on campus the following year. The event will conclude at the Schaefer Center with an official closing ceremony where one sculptor will be chosen as this year’s Rosen Award winner.
This year’s juror is Sam Spiczka, a Minnesota-based sculptor who blends modern geometric structures with organic pieces inspired by rural technology and natural bone.
Grace Raimo, the communications & content coordinator for the Turchin Center, wrote in a press release that the competition is also presented by An Appalachian Summer Festival alongside the Turchin Center.
Hosted by the Schaefer Center, An Appalachian Summer Festival is an annual event that brings together a diverse set of performances to the high country each July. With live music, dance, theatre and visual art all being showcased in Boone every summer, locals and tourists alike are able to experience the rich artistic culture of Boone.
“Together, these initiatives transform Boone into a vibrant cultural hotspot, providing world-class exhibitions and performances that enrich the High Country,” Raimo wrote.
