App State (1-2) earned their first victory of the season as they defeated the Warren Wilson Owls (3-2) by a score of 119-51. This was the largest victory margin in school history and the second-highest point total that the Mountaineers have ever scored.
The Good:
With 119 points, the Mountaineers scored the most points ever in the Holmes Center.
App State had five players score in double figures: freshman guard Patrick Good (16), junior guard Jake Babic (13), sophomore forward Tyrell Johnson (13), sophomore guard Emarius Logan (11) and sophomore guard Ronshad Shabazz (10).
The Mountaineers had a high assist percentage with 27 assists on 40 made field goals.
App State outrebounded the Owls by 30, 55-25.
The Mountaineers held Warren Wilson to just four offensive rebounds.
The Mountaineer defense held the Owls to 30 percent shooting from the field.
App State shot 57.1 percent for the game and 42.9 percent from three point-range.
App State committed 12 less personal fouls than the Owls.
The Mountaineers had 13 players play double digit-minutes, allowing some of their youth to develop.
As a team, App State made 27 of their 34 free throws, tallying up to 79.4 percent.
The Mountaineers caused 14 steals and 22 total turnovers.
Sophomore guard Kevin Kerley scored his first points as a Mountaineer.
The Bad:
While the Mountaineers forced many turnovers, they also gave the ball away too often, committing 13 turnovers of their own.
Even with their height advantage, the Mountaineers were only able to pull down 13 offensive rebounds, which coach Jim Fox said was less than the team’s goal.
The Mountaineers were one point away from tying and two points away from breaking the all-time record for most points in a game.
A Good Day
Patrick Good continued his hot shooting streak, hitting five of his seven shots, four from behind the three-point line.
That gives Good nine three’s in his last two games. Good looks to be the hot shooting option for the Mountaineers as they head further into the season.
Good said he wants to contribute in many ways to the team, and that includes providing a spark off the bench. He led all scorers with 16 points.
Block Party
Tyrell Johnson and junior forward Griffin Kinney dominated inside all game long.
Kinney had three blocks and was a force on the defensive end. While he only had two rebounds and four points, he was a vocal leader for the team and also helped with spacing on the offensive side of the ball.
Johnson tallied two more blocks and six rebounds to go along with his 13 points.
The Mountaineers’ height and length was an obvious factor in the blowout win.
Three Possessions, Three Layups
In the second half, Emarius Logan scored layups in transition on three straight possessions.
While, the game was already in hand with the Mountaineers up by more than 45, the stretch by Logan gave the team an emotional boost to help the team close out the win.
Logan, who finished with 11 points, also had two assists and a rebound in the game.
What’s Next?
