App State field hockey returned home for the first time since Hurricane Helene Sunday to take on No. 1 North Carolina. The Mountaineers lost 5-0.
The Black and Gold looked to start the match with strong and controlled possession for a good amount of the first quarter. However, the Tar Heels struck first and took a 1-0 lead at the end of the quarter.
The Tar Heels scored again in the second quarter. The Mountaineers’ offensive struggles continued in this quarter. They trailed 2-0 after the second quarter.
North Carolina carried this momentum into the third quarter and scored the only goal of the quarter to extend the lead to 3-0.
The Mountaineers allowed two more goals in the final quarter. App State picks up their second consecutive loss 5-0.
Senior goalkeeper Claire Grenis recorded 11 saves in the match, which is a new career high. App State was outshot 22 to three.
App State will host Ball State on Friday for Senior Day. The match will begin at 6 p.m. The Mountaineers hope to return to the win column against a familiar conference opponent.
