App State wrapped up their two-game weekend road trip Sunday with a match against the Virginia Commonwealth Rams at 1 p.m.
The Mountaineers came out on fire defensively, not allowing a single shot in the scoreless first period.
The Rams opened up the scoring with a goal late in the second period. The penalty corner conversion gave VCU a 1-0 lead heading into the half.
Junior forward Bridget Donovan leveled the game at the 38-minute mark with a tap-in goal following a deflection. This served as Donovan’s first goal of the season.
Sophomore midfielder Sophia Baxter sent the Black and Gold into the fourth period with a 2-1 lead by converting on a penalty stroke in the final minute of the third.
The Mountaineers watched their narrow lead slip away as VCU converted on a penalty corner goal to tie the match with just under two minutes remaining in regulation. The teams went into overtime knotted at 2-2.
The Rams came up with a game-winning goal one minute into the overtime session game. The 3-2 loss lands the Mountaineers at 2-2 on the season.
Although App State put up their lowest number of shots on the season with 10, their ability to convert with minimal scoring opportunities is a positive sign moving forward.
The Mountaineers will return home on Friday for a matchup with Wake Forest at 6 p.m.
