There are two reported cases of MRSA in Sanford Hall, according to a public health announcement released by the Appalachian State Office of Environmental Health, Safety and Emergency Management.
The health announcement lays out a three part strategy for dealing with the outbreak which includes raising awareness, taking preventative measures and implementing control strategies.
According to the statement, Environmental Services will be using Vindicator+, a disinfectant effective against MRSA, in the building over the next week.
The statement recommends everyone in the building to cover wounds, frequently clean their hands, not to share personal items that come into contact with skin and to see a doctor immediately if anyone suspects they have an infection.
The statement also advises against using antibiotics for viral infections, which increases bacterial resistance.
