The sexual assault that was reported on Sept. 6 never occurred, University Police said in an email update Thursday.
The original crime alert sent out to campus said the assault occurred Aug. 29 in a wooded area near the tennis courts behind the athletic complex.
Police said after completing the investigation with assistance from the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigations, they have determined that the assault did not happen and there is no ongoing threat to campus.
The incident was the only assault reported this year that allegedly involved an unknown acquaintance.
Police also included the North Carolina General Statute regarding false reports to law enforcement and reminded the campus that criminal charges can be faced.
