“Ailey II: The Next Generation of Dance” will be coming to the Schaefer Center for the Performing Arts Feb. 20 at 7:30 p.m. Led by Francesca Harper, the artistic director for the show, the evening of ensembles will feature “Streams,” “Down the Rabbit Hole” and “Revelations,” followed by a Q&A with Harper and members of Appalachian Arts.
In a press release from Appalachian Arts, Allison West, the director of marketing and public relations, wrote that Ailey II has been established for more than five decades, and is known as one of the most acclaimed contemporary dance companies in the nation.
“Founded in 1974 as a bridge between The Ailey School and the professional dance world, the company embodies Alvin Ailey’s pioneering mission to nurture the next generation of talented artists and reach audiences around the world by making dance accessible to all,” West wrote.
Opening the night, choreographer Alvin Ailey’s “Streams” is an abstract piece set to a percussion score by Miloslav Kabelac. It will feature a collection of solos, duets and group choreography that move fluidly to the formal, meditative mood of Kabelá, West wrote.
Set to a score by Johannes Goldbach and Pomassl, “Down the Rabbit Hole” is a continuation of Houston Thomas’ “Follow the White Rabbit.” West wrote it explores the relationship between humans and technology, taking inspiration from “The Matrix” series.
“Revelations” is the final section of the night, consisting of performances set to holy blues, African American spirituals, gospel songs and song-sermons. West wrote this enduring classic “fervently explores the places of deepest grief and holiest joy in the soul.”
Ailey II is offering a free community masterclass inspired by “Revelations” on Feb. 19 from 5-6:15 p.m at the Varsity Gym Dance Studio 208 A/B. Registration is encouraged, and anyone ages 10 and up is welcome.
Tickets to “Ailey II: The Next Generation of Dance” can be purchased online, with child and student tickets priced at $10 and others varying from $25 to $45, depending on the three seating tiers. App State faculty and staff receive a 10% discount if they call the box office to receive a code.
