App State faced off against the Georgia Southern University Eagles Wednesday night and continued their 7-game winning streak 81-65.
Graduate student guard Kasen Jennings nailed the Mountaineers’ first shot of the game from beyond the arc one minute into the game.
Just a minute later, senior guard Alonzo Dodd followed suit with his own 3-pointer.
Sophomore forward Michael Marcus Jr. recorded his first offensive rebound of the game just three minutes into the game.
Five minutes into the game, App State was up 10-7. After back-and-forth offensive rebounds, the Mountaineers were able to get a steal followed with a slam dunk by junior forward Chad Moodie.
App State went on a 6-0 run and utilized tight defense, which got Jennings to the foul line with an and-1.
App State started to lose some steam after giving up a pair of offensive rebounds, which gave the Eagles a wide open 3-pointer.
The Black and Gold led a 20-13 with just seven minutes left in the first half. Jennings gave App State a small cushion with a pair of free throws from his and-1. The Mountaineers had successful ball control, giving Marcus a wide open look from the 3-point line. This set them apart by 9 and gave them a 28-19 lead with less than three minutes left.
As the clock was winding down, the Eagles sprung into action and went 5-0 in the next minute.
With just 30 seconds left on the clock, Jennings got the steal and an and-1, just the momentum App State needed heading into the locker room 31-27.
In the first half, Jennings recorded 9 points, Marucs had 7 and Dodd had 6.
The second half was already an improvement for the Black and Gold as they went on a 5-0 run in just two minutes, sending Marcus to the free throw line twice.
App State showed their powerful defense, keeping the Eagles to just 3 points in three minutes.
With less than eight minutes on the game clock, the Mountaineers were up 63-52.
The final five minutes showed much more action than before as Marcus drilled a 3-pointer paired with a Dodd layup.
App State pulled away a significant amount, leading 77-63 with just a minute to go.
Marcus sealed the victory with an and-1, giving the Mountaineers a 16 points lead on the Eagles.
The Black and Gold secured their seventh win in a row against the Eagles 81-65. Jennings ended the night with 31 points, shooting 50% from the field and nearly a perfect 11-12 from the charity strike. Marcus had a double-double with 20 points and 10 rebounds. Dodd had 18 points while grabbing 6 rebounds.
App State faces off against James Madison University in Harrisonburg, Virginia at 4 p.m. The game will be streamed live on ESPN+.
