App State women’s tennis defeated the Western Carolina University Catamounts 6-1 Saturday.
Junior Naledi Manyube and junior Taya Powell opened the day with a 6-2 doubles win. Sophomore Ruby Broadbent and freshman Allegra Hodson won their doubles match with a 6-3 win, which secured the win as the Catamounts could not field a third team.
The Mountaineers went into singles with a 3-0 lead.
Powell was defeated by Mariya Dobreva in the No. 1 singles match, the only point scored by the Catamounts.
Manyube secured a win in straight sets, which allowed Hodson to secure the overall victory, winning in straight sets 6-2, 6-4, making the score 4-1 with 3 matches remaining.
Broadbent won the last match of the day in straight sets 6-1, 6-3. Western Carolina did not field a No. 5 or No. 6 singles, handing the Black and Gold 2 free points.
App State moves to 2-2 in the spring season, after winning their last 2 matches. They will look to keep the streak alive Friday as they travel to Kennesaw, Georgia to face the Kennesaw State University Owls at 11 a.m.
