App State women’s basketball traveled to Troy, Alabama to take on the Troy University Trojans Wednesday. The Mountaineers lost 69-59, their second loss in a row.
Junior guard Daisia Mitchell lit up the scoreboard first for the Mountaineers with a layup.
Sophomore forward Feryal Defne Atli gave the Black and Gold their first lead of the game with a jumper, making the score 4-3.
Toward the end of the quarter, senior forward Elena Pericic knocked down the first 3-pointer of the game for the Mountaineers, taking a 16-15 lead.
Atli would cap off the quarter with a layup, giving App State a 20-17 lead and bring her point total to 6.
The Trojans started the second quarter on an 11-0 run before a layup from Mitchell, making the score 31-22. The Mountaineers were outscored in the second quarter 19-6 and went into the locker room down 36-26.
Graduate student guard Jada Burton started the third quarter with back-to-back 3-pointers, shrinking the deficit to 4.
The Black and Gold regained the lead off another basket from Burton, 39-38. They went back and forth until the end of the third quarter and Troy took a 50-49 lead into the final quarter.
The beginning of the fourth quarter was slow, and freshman forward Addie Biel tied the game at 54 with a layup. The Trojans responded with back-to-back 3-pointers, taking a 6 point lead.
In the end, Troy was able to hang on and pick up the win on their home court.
The Black and Gold will stay on the road and travel to Kent, Ohio to face off against Kent State University Saturday for the MAC-SBC Challenge. Tip off is set for 1 p.m. and will be streamed on ESPN+.
