App State women’s basketball traveled to UNC-Asheville in their second away game. The Mountaineers bounced back from their 80-51 loss against West Virginia University by dominating the Bulldogs. On Saturday, App State won 64-40, improving their win-loss ratio to 4-2.
Junior guard Daisia Mitchell jumpstarted the scoreless match with a successful shot inside the 3-point line. Both Mitchell and sophomore guard Jayden McBride totalled 11 points each throughout the game. Following a 3-all tie in the first quarter, the Mountaineers pushed ahead to keep the lead for the remainder of the game, and ended the quarter holding onto a 17-13 advantage.
The second quarter widened the gap for the Black and Gold. With just over five minutes left to go, App State went on a 14-2 run. A series of 6 defensive rebounds from Mitchell, senior forward Elena Pericic and McBride secured the lead. App State finished the quarter with a 15-point 38-23 lead.
In multiple offensive chances, McBride set the tone for the beginning of the second half with 2 successful layups. As the Bulldogs inched their way along, attempting shots, the Mountaineers racked them up. Five fouls from UNC Asheville proved the Bulldogs’ frustration, as their offense began to break down, and they were unable to take advantage of offensive opportunities. This gave way to a 50-34 lead.
The Black and Gold managed to maintain strong defense throughout the final quarter. A total of 6 turnovers and 6 points scored, was an unsuccessful end to the game for the Bulldogs.
The Mountaineers ended the night winning 64-40.
App State will return home to face off against Norfolk State University at noon Tuesday. The game will be streamed on ESPN+.
