App State women’s basketball traveled to Coastal Carolina University Wednesday and fell short in a narrow 64-65 loss.
After being down 0-6 in the first quarter, junior guard Daisia Mitchell put the Mountaineers on the board with 2 successful free throws. Following a layup from freshman guard Riley Stoker and a basket from senior guard Emily Hege, the quarter ended with the Chanticleers in the lead 6-18.
The gap remained throughout the second quarter. Following a 3-pointer from senior guard Emma Smith, the Black and Gold eventually put double digits on the board, making it 12-20 Chanticleers. The half ended in a 24-31 Coastal Carolina lead.
In the third quarter, Stoker and Smith combined for 14 of App State’s 19 points. After a 3-pointer from Stoker and 2 successful free throws from Smith, the Mountaineers closed the lead to a 1-point differential. Despite this, App State continued to trail 43-57.
Although the Black and Gold outscored the Chanticleers 21-8 in the fourth quarter, the Mountaineers couldn’t catch up. The game finished with a final score of 65-64.
On Saturday, App State travels to James Madison University at 2 p.m. The game will be streamed live on ESPN+.
