App State women’s tennis had their third win of the spring season on Friday with a 5-2 win over Kennesaw State.
The Mountaineers fell behind in the doubles play, but junior Naledi Manyube and freshman Sreenidhi Balaji were able to push for a win. Kennesaw State stole the point before they could finish a comeback. Down 1-0 heading into singles, the Mountaineers responded and pulled ahead. Senior Savannah Dada-Mascoll had a 6-3, 6-1 win to put App State on the board. Following junior Taya Powell earned the first lead with a 6-2, 6-4 win and Manyu had a straight win to tie the match 2-2.
Freshman Allegra Hodson won 6-4, 6-2 to gain another point for the team and sophomore Ruby Broadbent had her third singles win of the season to finish the win for the Mountaineers.
Following this win, App State women’s tennis lost 4-3 in a close match against Mercer University on Saturday at the Copelan Tennis Complex in Macon, Georgia.
Dada-Mascoll and Powell started the match with a 6-4 win, but despite this the Mountaineers dropped the doubles point and Mercer moved into the singles matches with a lead.
Dada-Mascoll quickly evened the teams score in singles with a 6-4, 6-0 win. Mercer answered on courts 3 and 5 to take a 3-1 advantage, but the Black and Gold kept pushing. Hodson had a straight set win with a first-set tiebreak. Sophomore Alexi Cleveland had three sets to tie the match at 3-3.
The tiebreaker was where Manyube won the second set 7-6 but Mercer was able to win the final set and won the match.
App State will be home next weekend hosting Austin Peay State University at the App State Tennis Courts at the Appalachian 105 Complex.
