On Saturday, App State women’s track and field traveled to Lexington, Virginia, where they competed in the VMI Team Challenge at the Virginia Military Institute. The Mountaineers dominated with 230 points across the board.
Starting strong with 24 points, the Mountaineers held the top three spots in the women’s mile. The Mountaineers’ underclassmen put on an impressive performance, with sophomore Savannah Moore not only coming in first place but also setting a new personal record. Freshman Josie Jackson came in second, and freshman Tessa Massa followed close in third place.
Junior Kendall Johnson, along with several other Mountaineers, advanced past the preliminary 60-meter dash. In the finals, Johnson took first with a time of 7.43.
In the 400-meter sprint, the Black and Gold dominated the race, with the top five spots held only by App State. The times were all under a minute, with senior Damyja Alejandro-Ortiz leading with a 55.43 sprint.
Alejandro-Ortiz also competed in the 200-meter sprint and took home first with a time of 24.10. While she narrowly came in first, the second and third places were also held by Mountaineers.
Sophomore Harlee Fonville was the only athlete to score above 12 meters in shot put. She came in first with a 12.87-meter throw. e
In the high jump, freshman Ashlynn Wimberly took first place with a 1.68-meter jump.
Mountaineers women’s track and field returns on Friday at the Hokie Invitational for the first of two meets in Blacksburg, Virginia.
