App State women’s tennis picked up their first win of the spring season with a convincing 7-0 victory over UNC-Asheville Friday. The doubles portion of the matchup saw the Mountaineers sweep the Bulldogs, as no duo allowed more than 3 set wins.
Senior No. 5 Savannah Dada-Mascoll and junior Taya Powell kicked off the day in dominant fashion, dismantling their opponents 6-2. Both ladies had strong showings in their singles matches, each winning in straight sets.
Sophomore Rudy Broadbent and freshman Allegra Hodson were the second doubles matchup of the day as they also handily defeated the duo across the court 6-3. Broadbent followed up her doubles with an impressive singles affair winning 6-2, 6-2.
Hodson’s singles matchup was the closest of the afternoon, seeing all 3 sets.
UNC-Asheville’s Maria Sol Alvarez won the second set 6-4 after being outclassed by Hodson in the first 6-1. It took 17 back-and-forth games for Hodson to pick up the win as she roared in triumph as the last point went her way.
Junior Naledi Manyube and freshman Sreenidhi Balaji continued doubles domination for the Black and Gold as they won their dual 6-3. Both players had great showings in the singles department with Manyube winning 6-2, 6-3 and Balaji 6-2, 6-1.
This match was slated to be the first of a 2-event weekend for App State but with more winter weather hitting Boone, the scheduled Sunday matchup against Davidson College has been postponed. It will now be played on Thursday, March 5 at 1 p.m. in Boone.
App State women’s tennis heads to Johnson City, Tennessee for the next matchup against East Tennessee State University. The battle is set for 2 p.m. on Thursday.
