App State women’s basketball traveled to the University of Louisiana Friday, and the Mountaineers dominated in every quarter. Although the Black and Gold started on a defensive foot, the last half of the game was controlled by App State’s offense.
The Mountaineers set the tone of the game in the first quarter by utilizing their defense.
They played conservatively, which allowed them to gain an 18-11 lead. Junior guard Daisia Mitchell was a contributing force on this defense with 2 steals in this first quarter.
Missed opportunities from the Mountaineers offense contributed to the Ragin’ Cajuns comeback. Louisiana came back to a 22-all tie and held the lead for the second time since the first quarter. However, a basket from freshman forward Addie Biel and a 3-pointer from graduate student guard Jada Burton put the Mountaineers ahead. The quarter ended with a 32-29 App State lead.
The start of the second half began with a successful layup from Mitchell. The junior put up 7 of her 17 points in the quarter. With a 12-0 run, the Black and Gold held a 48-33 lead.
Going into the final quarter, App State held a 51-42 lead.
Though they started with a strong defense in the first quarter, App State dominated on offense in the last quarter. The Mountaineers outscored the Ragin’ Cajuns 17-6 in the fourth quarter and Burton scored the last Mountaineer points with 23 seconds left. Though Louisiana ended the game with a basket of their own, App State took the win 68-48.
On Thursday, App State hosts the University of South Alabama at 6:30 p.m. The game will be streamed live on ESPN+.
