App State women’s basketball traveled to San Marcos, Texas for a nightcap game against Texas State University. They lost 63-49 against the Bobcats.
After an early jumper from Texas State, junior guard Daisia Mitchell responded less than two minutes in, scoring a layup. Sophomore guard Jayden McBride followed closely with another layup off of an assist from senior guard Emma Smith to take the lead. Senior forward Elena Pericic added a jumper in the paint to help extend the lead late in the quarter. Following Pericic, freshman forward Addie Biel and McBride added two free throws to the board to end the quarter with a 8-7 lead.
Smith started the second quarter with a steal which let her get a free throw and a layup but Texas State responded quickly. Sophomore forward Feryal Defne Atli had a layup in the paint to tie the 13-13 game. The Bobcats kept responding but Atli had another layup in the paint and graduate forward Zoe McCrary added a free throw in an effort to try and close the point gap. App State put in lots of effort but Texas State ended the first half with a 28-16 advantage.
Coming out of halftime, App State was trying to push back on Texas, senior guard Emily Hege and Biel added points with layups in the paint, while Mitchell, McBride and Smith added more baskets. Smith also had a 3-pointer that let her teammates score as the Black and Gold worked to close the gap. Despite the effort from the Mountaineers, Texas State maintained their lead to end the game with a 63-49 win.
Next, The Mountaineers travel to Lafayette, Louisiana for a 2 p.m. game against Louisiana on Saturday and will be streamed on ESPN+.
