The Mountaineers continued their indoor track and field season, participating in the UNC-Asheville Collegiate Opener at Tryon International. App State women’s track and field team competed across a number of events, starting off with the women’s 3000-meter. The Black and Gold finished first, second and third, with those finishes coming from sophomore Breanna Budzinski, junior Mary Biagini and freshman Ashby Williams.
In the women’s mile run, App State had three runners finish in the top five with freshman Tessa Massa coming in first, followed behind by freshman Elizabeth McCart who finished second and rounded out by senior Maddie Quinn finishing fifth.
In the women’s 60-meter finals the Black and Gold rounded out the top five with junior Jayla Adams finishing in third, junior Kendall Johnson finishing fourth and junior Nicole Wells finishing fifth.
The mountaineers next event was the women’s 300-meter where the Black and Gold had 4 of their 6 runners finish in the top 5: Adams in first, senior Damyja Alejandro-Ortiz in second, Wells in third and Johnson in fourth.
This story continued over to the women’s 800-meter, where the Mountaineers had all of their runners finish in the top 5 with freshman Josie Jackson, senior Addison Ollendick-Smith and sophomore Savannah Moore taking the podium positions. Sophomore Ella Battel took fifth place.
Then, it was onto the last track event of the day, the women’s 600-meter, where the Mountaineers took all podium spots again, with Jackson taking first, Moore coming in second, Ollendick-Smith in third and Battel finishing in fifth.
The Black and Gold started field events with women’s pole vault, where senior Ava Studney finished first with a 3.79m mark, followed by a tie between sophomore Abigail Goetz and Wofford’s Olivia Burroughs at a 3.49m mark.
After pole vault, the Black and Gold took first in long jump with a 5.98m mark out of freshman Alana Braxton.
Then, it was onto shot put where the Mountaineers had 2 finishers in the top 5 in sophomore Emily Edwards with a 12.30m mark and freshman Harlee Fonville with an 11.97m mark.
The Black and Gold continued its dominance in the triple jump as freshman Ashlynn Wimberly took home first with a 12.38m mark.
Finally, it was onto the last event of the day, women’s weight throw, where Edwards took home first with a 16.89m mark.
Women’s track and field will be back in action at the Virginia Military Institute for the VMI Team Challenge in Lexington, Virginia on Saturday.
