In a weekend series against Troy University, App State baseball went 2-1. Following a 13-7 and 5-0 win, the Mountaineers lost their final game 10-3.
Saturday, the Black and Gold played a doubleheader due to a postponement the previous day. In the first game, App State went back and forth with the Trojans for the first three innings, trailing 5-2.Â
In the seventh inning, the Mountaineers scored 11 unanswered runs. A hit from graduate student infielder Steven Smith scored junior outfielder Drew DuPont and senior catcher Tommy Walker.
Sophomore infielder Ethan Puig homered to left field, allowing senior outfielder Charlie Evans and Smith to score. The game resulted in a 13-7 Mountaineer win.
Later in the day, the teams played again.
The game started with five scoreless innings. In the top of the sixth, sophomore utility player Riley Luft scored on a DuPont single.
Luft continued to put runs on the board after hitting his third home run of the season, driving in Evans and Smith.Â
The game ended in a 5-0 App State shutout.
Despite its first two wins, the Black and Gold crumbled in the third game.
Following a Puig hit to right center, Evans and Smith scored.Â
Despite this early lead, Troy continued its momentum from the fifth inning until the end of the game. The game ended in a 10-3 loss for the Black and Gold.
The Mountaineers will return to the High Country to take on the University of Louisiana Friday. The game will begin at 6 p.m.
