App State women’s tennis defeated the Davidson College Wildcats Thursday in a home game 5-2, but suffered a close loss against the Virginia Commonwealth University Rams Friday 3-4. Their split weekend sets their season at 5-7.
Senior Savannah Dada-Mascoll won her ninth single match of the season against Wildcat senior Savanna Kollock 6-2, 6-2. Kollock and Dada-Mascoll saw each other shortly after in the doubles play where Dada-Mascoll and junior Taya Powell ended their match 3-4, and marked as unfinished.
Freshman Allegra Hodson carried momentum into singles play, earning a 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 4 to extend the Mountaineers lead.
Junior Naledi Manyube fought at the No 2. position in a close tiebreaker. Although the Wildcats earned points at the No 3. And No 5. spots, the final point came from Manyube which cemented the win 6-4, 6-1 which snapped her three game losing streak.
Strong performances led to their first victory over the Wildcats since 2023.
On Friday, the Rams proved to be a much tighter competition handing them another loss 4-3.
App State stayed within close range the entire afternoon, but it came down to the final singles court.
Freshman Sreenidhi Balaji defeated Sara Alba 6-3, 6-2. This match extended her victory streak to 3 matches and evened out the lopsided score 3-3 for the Mountaineers.
Dada-Mascoll and Bajaji were the only two players to win their singles match. Doubles play saw a different story, as Powell and Dada-Mascoll won 6-5. Sophomore Ruby Broadbent and Manyube clinched it 6-4, and Hodson and Balaji won 6-4.
The Mountaineers will head to Lipscomb University in Jacksonville, Florida on Friday to take on the Bisons. The match is set for 3 p.m.
