No foul play has been suspected in the death of Anna Smith and a letter was found with Smith’s body that she appears to have written, according to a statement released by Boone police Monday afternoon
Boone Chief of Police Dana Crawford said in the release they are not yet releasing the content of the letter, but there are factors indicating that Smith may have been intent on harming herself. Police have requested that the letter be forensically investigated.
Crawford’s statement also said the investigation surrounding the death of Anna Smith is still underway and no conclusions have yet been reached. All possible causes of death are still being considered.
Smith’s autopsy is being conducted today by a forensic pathologist, but information may not be released right away, according to the release.
Crawford said despite popular belief in the community, there is currently no information leading the case in the direction of homicide.
The Boone Police department is working with the N.C. State Bureau of Investigation, University police, the N.C. Medical Examiner’s Office and the Watauga County Sherrif’s Office.
