The Sexuality and Gender Alliance’s Spring Amateur Drag Show will be held Thursday at 7:30 p.m in the Parkway Ballroom of Plemmons Student Union.

The show, which follows a Disney theme, promises to bring back the best of childhood to the stage for Appalachian State University students.

“The Disney show theme was chosen by our members vote, and I think it can combine a kind of nostalgia with modern day interpretations,” said Elizabeth Tate, vice president of public relations for SAGA.

Sophomore French studies major Alec Wood, who will co-host the show for the night, said the theme might help create an inviting feeling at the show.

“I feel like it will create a relaxed environment, which will make it much more approachable and maybe entice a few performers who wouldn’t have performed otherwise,” Wood said.

Unlike the professional drag shows hosted every semester with entertainers who compete around the state, the amateur drag show is open to Appalachian students, as both drag queens and drag kings, to participate. They will compete for the titles of Mr. and Ms. Appalachian.

“Events like these provide entertainment and an outlet for performers to shine,” Tate said.

For the first time this semester, each winner of Mr. and Ms. Appalachian will have a percentage of ticket sales donated to a philanthropy of their choice.

“If you come, then you definitely bring some tip money,” Wood said. “Queens and kings – even amateur queens and kings – won’t be too happy if they don’t get tipped. Drag ain’t cheap, honey.”

Tickets will be sold at the door for $5.
