On Thursday, App State baseball hosted UNC-Asheville in a 17-7 win.
The Mountaineers put the first runs on the board in the bottom of the first inning. Sophomore utility player Riley Luft and senior outfielder Charlie Evans scored a run each.
In the second inning, both teams scored multiple runs. In the top of the second, the Bulldogs put up 6 runs to get their only lead of the game. Despite a 44-minute lightning delay, the Mountaineers’ momentum continued. The team responded with 2 runs of their own and tied the game at 6-all.
The Black and Gold regained control of the game in the third inning, with senior catcher Tommy Walker and senior infielder Jake Mummau each scoring a run.
Though the Bulldogs managed 1 run, the Mountaineers pulled away in the fourth inning. In back-to-back fashion, sophomore infielder Ethan Puig scored as redshirt junior infielder Jonathan Xuereb, freshman outfielder Nico Soul and Walker followed. After an 8-run series, App State held the lead 16-7.
Both teams remained scoreless in the following 3 innings.
In the eighth and final inning, Puig closed the game with 1 final run.
The Mountaineers will return to the High Country and take on Marshall University on Thursday. The game will begin at 6 p.m. and will be streamed live on ESPN+.
