App States women’s basketball went 1-1 over its two game stretch, with a home win 60-57 over the University of South Alabama before a 78-70 loss to the University of Louisiana Monroe.
On Thursday the Mountaineers played against South Alabama in a tight game being head-to-head till the end.
TheBlack and Gold fell behind at the start of the game but quickly recovered and controlled the last three quarters. Tighter defense allowed the Black and Gold to take a 29-28 lead into halftime.

Coming out of the break, App State continued their defensive streak and went on a 7-0 run. Junior Daisia Mitchell scored 8 points in the third quarter making sure that the Mountaineers could maintain their lead. South Alabama answered late but kept trying to close the gap and overall the Mountaineers won. Mitchell led the game by delivering 17 points and senior guard Emma Smith adding 15.
“We really want to be a disciplined team, but I feel like we are smart enough players to read their eyes and it was key for today because they were being super aggressive and physical,” Smith said in the post game interview.
On Friday, the Mountaineers continued at home to play ULM . Both teams were able to score in the first half, but ULM was able to pull ahead into halftime with a 34-27 advantage. Coming out of halftime, graduate student guard Jada Burton put up 12 of her 16 points and Smith continued her skill from the South Alabama game, adding 13 points.
Despite falling for most of the game, the Mountaineers stayed within reach, cutting into the gap and outsourcing ULM in the fourth quarter. While they were able to play strong defense in the game they still came up short in a 78-70 loss.
Next, App State travels to Troy, Alabama to compete against Troy University at 7 p.m. on Wednesday.
