ASU lost its home opener to the University of Delaware 2-1, Saturday at Kidd-Brewer Stadium.
With the loss Appalachian falls 2-6 on the overall season, and Delaware improves to 4-6 overall.
The Mountaineers lit of the scoreboard first when they were awarded a penalty corner 10 minutes into the match. Senior Casey Lammando passed the ball to sophomore Dana Wetmore who found the back of the cage, giving Appalachian a 1-0 lead.
“Scoring a goal early was a great way to start the game,” Wetmore said. “Although we let a goal pretty quickly after our first one, it was definitely a confidence booster.”
Delaware came back just 17 seconds later and matched the score 1-1 as Claire O’Malley scored a goal for the Blue Hens.
The score continued to be tied for the rest of the first half, as Delaware outshot ASU 5-4.
The Blue Hens scored the final goal of the match at 51:57 when Hannah Pepper took a shot off a penalty corner.
The Mountaineers looked to tie the score later in the game, but the goal was called back.
Wetmore lead the Mountaineers with three shots on goal, and sophomore Jessi Stuart recorded two shots on goal.
Even after saving eight shots in the net, senior goalkeeper Sarah Anderson recorded a loss. Her record falls to 2-6 this overall season.
The Mountaineers play again on Sunday, Sept. 23 when they open up NorPac play against Davidson.
The match starts at 1 p.m. and will be held in Kidd-Brewer Stadium.
