The Mountaineers had to rely on some last minute heroics from quarterback Jamal Jackson and the offense to pull off an improbable 28-25 victory on the road at No. 25 Samford.

A touchdown grab in the corner of the end zone by wide receiver Sean Price with 22 seconds remaining capped off the App’s game winning drive and propelled them to their fifth straight win over Samford.

“Jamal put the ball on me and I was able to make the catch,” Price said. “I had never been in that situation, but it was a great situation and I enjoyed it.”

The game seemed out of reach after The Mountaineers failed to convert a fourth down late in the game to give the ball back to the Bulldogs.

But once App got the ball back Jackson orchestrated an 80 yard drive in just over a minute that put ASU on top.

“We knew we had our backs against the wall,” Jackson said. “But we practice these situations all the time so that we know how to execute when the time comes… it’s not always going to be easy, but that’s why we practice. We found a way to preserve as a team.”

The Mountaineers were ahead 21-10 at halftime but allowed 15 unanswered points in the fourth quarter that put them on the brink of defeat.

“We didn’t play as well as we’d want but were still able to come back and win, which I think you should be able to do if you’re a good football team,” Head Coach Jerry Moore said. “I am proud of our players. They gave great effort and never gave up.”

The Mountaineers are now 3-1 in conference play. and control their own destiny for a conference title, with games to be played against the top teams.

App will play home against Wofford Saturday. Kickoff is set for 3:30 p.m.
