Matchup: App State vs. Furman Paladins

How App State Can Win:

The Mountaineers are struggling and are in dire need of a win. Losing against Samford on homecoming should create a fire under them, but that’s been said before.

In order to win, App State is going to need a much more consistent offense out there that can produce steadily when the defense gives them their shot. That way, the defense isn’t always out on the field and can rest.

How Furman Can Win:

Furman’s defense will have to remain steadfast if they hope to beat the struggling Mountaineers.

They currently rank second in total defense in the SoCon behind Chattanooga, and the team is currently the best in rushing defense.

This bodes well for the Paladins since running back Marcus Cox is App State’s best offensive threat.

The Bottom Line:

Expect a low scoring game on both sides and a defensive battle.

Neither team is doing exceedingly well in both non-conference and conference games this season and both could seize the opportunity for a much-needed win in Saturday’s matchup.

Statistically, App State has a better offense and that could be key, but with Samford’s* defense, it could be a wash.

FINAL SCORE: 9-6 App State

*CORRECTION: The article mislabeled this week’s opponent as Samford, when App State actually faces Furman. The Appalachian apologizes for the error.
