On Tuesday, App State baseball traveled to Cullowhee to take on the Western Carolina University Catamounts. The Mountaineers suffered a blowout loss, 14-4, marking their second loss to the Catamounts this season, following a 13-3 blowout earlier in the season.
The Mountaineers got off to a rough start in the first inning after surrendering 3 runs, giving the Catamounts a 3-0 lead. App State was able to claw back in the second inning following an RBI-double from senior infielder Jake Mummau before a sacrifice fly ball from senior outfielder Charlie Evans brought senior catcher Tommy Walker home, bringing the Mountaineers within a 3-2 margin.
The momentum quickly shifted back to Western Carolina after scoring 10 runs in the third inning, making it a 13-2 lead and creating a big gap for App State. In the fourth, fifth and sixth innings, senior right-handed pitcher JJ Garcia pitched 3 shutout innings in relief of junior right-handed pitcher Logan Tibbett.
App State continued to battle as junior designated hitter Kameron Miller reached base 3 times, going 1 for 2 with 2 walks and a run scored. Mummau went 2 for 4 with 2 RBIs, while Evans also added an RBI. Graduate student infielder and right-handed pitcher Steven Smith added a hit of his own as the Mountaineers totaled 5 hits in the game.
Sophomore right fielder Riley Luft added another run in the fifth inning, trimming the deficit to 13-4, but the Catamounts had already sealed the deal after scoring 1 last run in the seventh inning, making the final score 14-4.
