App State women’s basketball hosted Coastal Carolina University at the Holmes Convocation Center Wednesday. The Mountaineers fell 69-53.
During the first quarter, senior guard Emily Hege put a 3-pointer on the board following sophomore guard Jayden McBride, who knocked down two free throws, bringing the score to 23-5 at the end of the first quarter.
Hege charged out to the second quarter making 2 free throws, then junior guard Daisia Mitchell followed closely with another 2 free throws, a jumper, a layup and a 3-pointer. Freshman guard Isa Roman made a 3-pointer, and a layup from freshman forward Addie Biel ended the first half with a 41-21 score.
Coming out of halftime, the Mountaineers started pushing back; about 20 seconds into the third quarter, Mitchell gained yet another basket for the team with a layup. Senior forward Elena Pericic then made 2 free throws, and Hege then followed with a jumper and sophomore forward Feryal Defne Atli made a layup.
To end the third quarter, Pericic made a layup and Biel followed by knocking down 2 free throws, bringing the score to 57-35.
Attempting to close the gap between the scores in the fourth quarter, Pericic shot out for a breakaway layup, free throw and a 3- pointer to cut the lead with a 63-41 score. She stayed consistent with another 3-pointer, while Mitchell added 2 free throws. McBride came back and got a layup and a 3- pointer. Mitchell ended the game with a tip in to close the game with a 69-53 loss.
Next, App State faces off against the University of Southern Mississippi on Saturday at 1 p.m. The game will be streamed on ESPN+.
