Appalachian State University student Diogenes Gabriel Morales was arrested Monday at approximately 8 p.m. at Walmart after an “unprovoked attack” on an elderly man.
Police were called and confronted Morales.
“Morales began walking away from officers and would not heed their commands to stop,” according to a press release. “[Morales] was taken into custody as he attempted to run back inside the store.”
Morales, a 21-year-old junior criminal justice major, allegedly jumped out of a merchandise bin and hit an elderly man in the face with no visible motive, according to the release.
Sgt. Shane Robbins of Boone Police said that there was no damage done to Walmart merchandise, although Morales did cause a disturbance.
The police reported that there was a controlled substance involved in the incident.
Morales has been charged with simple physical assault and resisting arrest. His court date has been set for Nov. 19.
Police are working with university officials through the student conduct board to decide how to further handle the situation, Robbins said.
