Rivalry matchups against the Georgia Southern University Eagles and Coastal Carolina University Chanticleers kept App State women’s tennis busy Easter weekend as they took down both schools away from Boone. They defeated Georgia Southern with a 4-0 sweep on Good Friday before defeating Coastal Carolina 4-3 the following day.
The singles portions of both matchups were the main driver of success over the weekend for the Black and Gold as they went 8-4 over 12 games. This moves the team’s overall singles record to 64-59 on the season.
The doubles side was hot and cold for App State over the weekend. The team went 2-0 in Statesboro, Georgia against the Eagles, with one match going unfinished, and 0-3 in Conway, South Carolina against the Chanticleers.
Senior No. 9 Savannah Dada-Mascoll continues her wondrous spring season with 2 singles wins over the weekend in the team’s No. 1 spot. The 2 wins extended her winning streak to 18. During the streak she’s won 22 sets in a row, with the last set loss coming on Feb. 28 against UT Arlington.
Also finishing undefeated over the weekend were freshman Sreenidhi Balaji and sophomore Alexi Cleveland. Balaji finished 1-0 with a straight set win against Coastal but her match against the Eagles was left unfinished during a 6-6 deadlock in the second set of her match. Cleveland did not drop a set all weekend as she outscored her opponents 24-9 in games on her way to a 2-0 record.
The 2 wins move App State to 4-1 over the last 5 games, with the one loss coming against No. 62 Old Dominion University. The team also moves to an equal .500 record at 10-10 with just two games left in the season.
App State will finish out the regular season with a home matchup against James Madison University April 17 and an April 19 matchup in Atlanta against Georgia State University. Both matches will begin at 10 a.m.
