App State track and field hosted the John Weaver Invitational this past weekend. With multiple podium finishes and a new school record, the Mountaineers dominated the meet.
On Friday, senior thrower Jake Stanley took first in men’s javelin with a 52.13-meter throw.
Women’s hammer throw was also a success, with first and second place being held by sophomore thrower Emily Edwards with a 48.58-meter throw and sophomore thrower Harlee Fonville with a 47.52-meter throw.
Senior pole vaulter Ava Studney placed first in the women’s pole vault with a 4.03-meter jump. Senior pole vaulter Caroline Fowlkes followed in second with a 3.58-meter jump.
In the men’s pole vault, junior pole vaulter Matthew Gray grabbed the top spot in dominant fashion with a record-setting jump of 5.62 meters. The jump set a school record, beating his previous record that was set just the week before at the App State Open.
In the men’s 1-mile, the Black and Gold had a podium finish. Sophomore distance runner Rowan Gwin placed first with a time of 4:02:37, senior distance runner Ethan Lipham followed closely with a time of 4:02:84 and redshirt freshman distance runner Noah Martinson placed third, stopping the clock at 4:03:20.
On Saturday, the Mountaineers continued their success. Fonville placed first in women’s discus with a 43.87-meter throw, and sophomore thrower Brittany Ellis took second with a 41.57-meter throw.
In women’s long jump, freshman jumper Alana Braxton set a season best with a 5.98-meter jump. Freshman jumper Kelly MacBride trailed closely behind with a 5.88-meter jump.
Mountaineer track and field returns May 14 in the Sun Belt Outdoor Championships. The teams will travel to Mobile, Alabama.
