Women’s soccer team ‘excited’ about upcoming season

Following the women’s soccer team’s 2012 overall record of 6-11-2, the team was picked to win 10th place in the overall standings for the Southern Conference Championship, according to a news release.

App is already off to a strong start after the team kicked off the preseason with a 2-0 victory against Campbell University. The preseason concluded with a tie against East Tennessee State University.

“We are as focused and as fit as we’ve ever been, and we’re very excited about the season,” Assistant Coach Lindsay Cobb said.

Head coach Sarah Strickland signed eleven additional members this year, according to a news release.

Although the team is fairly young for this fall, the team has a strong group of upperclassmen.

The team is led by seniors Hannah Coad, Taylor Dunlap, Meggie Graham and Sam McVeigh and junior Amy Werdine.

“We work very well together and have a lot of weapons to use to our advantage,” Croad said.

Dunlap said the team tried to include everyone and make new players feel welcome.

“As a team, we have a special connection which is hard to find, especially for a Division I team,” Dunlap said. “We’re all good friends.”

All five co-captains said they are friends which they hope will give them an edge during soccer games.

“We’re extremely tight and I think a lot of people underestimate the importance of a close team,” Werdine said. “Once at the tournament, the competition is pretty level, so anything can happen.”
