App State women’s basketball hosted Old Dominion University on Friday. Prior to tipoff, the Mountaineers celebrated their five seniors for senior night.
Following a steal and a successful layup, junior guard Daisia Mitchell put the first points on the board for the Black and Gold. Sophomore forward Feryal Defne Atli continued this momentum with back-to-back points, making it 6-0 Mountaineers. Despite this early start, Old Dominion pulled ahead 23-18 at the end of the first.
At the start of the second quarter, graduate student guard Jada Burton put up a successful layup for the Mountaineers. Despite landing another 3-pointer, the Monarchs went on a 12-3 run to close the half. The quarter ended with a score of 44-28 Old Dominion.
At the start of the second half, App State went on a 10-0 run, closing the gap. Despite the Mountaineers outsourcing the Monarchs in the quarter, Old Dominion kept the 13-point, 59-46 lead.
Mitchell opened the final quarter with a successful 3-pointer. With less than nine minutes left, Mitchell broke an Old Dominion player’s ankles and put up another 2 points.
However, the Black and Gold couldn’t catch up. The game ended with a 75-65 Old Dominion win.
On Tuesday, App State will travel to Pensacola, Florida to compete in the Sun Belt Tournament. They will face the University of South Alabama at 12:30 p.m. and the game will be streamed on ESPN+.
