Playlist of the week: Musical theatre melodies

Whether in your car or onstage, Broadway musicals captivate listeners with their unique storytelling and catchy melodies. From newer productions like “Hadestown” and “Hamilton” to classics such as “West Side Story” and “Cabaret,” this week’s playlist showcases a diverse catalog of musicals.

Opening with “Dancing Queen,” from the jukebox musical “Mamma Mia!,” listeners are hit with euphoric, upbeat tones, perfect for dancing around the house. Belt out your feelings with heartfelt ballads such as “Satisfied” from “Hamilton” and “At the Ballet” from “A Chorus Line,” featuring dramatic lyrics and dynamic instrumentation.

Anthems such as “The World Will Know” from “Newsies” and “You Can’t Stop the Beat” from “Hairspray” evoke danceable determination, ideal for a last-minute cram before an exam. Fan favorites such as “Defying Gravity” from “Wicked” and “So Much Better” from “Legally Blonde” give the perfect feel-good, nostalgic vibe for wrapping up the semester.

The playlist closes with an exclamation point in song form with Reneé Rapp’s rendition of “World Burn” from when she was in “Mean Girls,” the movie musical. The song wraps up the playlist on a climactic, definitive note, letting the listener feel their main character energy.

These musical numbers are perfect for theater lovers, music lovers and those seeking whimsy. With their danceable tones and powerful lyrics, they invite any listener to partake in lighthearted fun, sinking into emotional vocals, and fully into the show-business style of music Broadway shows have to offer.
